About the Work
American
Studies was my course of study in graduate school. Today as a photographer, I
think about the word ‘studies’ in a different way. Sad Christmas Tree And Other American Studies is an ongoing series exploring
elements of the American Dream including the concepts success, home, faith
and fame. I think most people have an American Dream, whether we share it with
a partner, announce it on Facebook or keep it for ourselves, unspoken.
I’m interested in exploring the space between this dream and the day-to-day
events that happen as we live our lives.
About the Artist
Tracy Fleischman Morgenthau is a Los
Angeles based photographer whose work is shaped by her interest in US social
history and the documentary tradition.
While earning an undergraduate degree in History at the University of
California, Berkeley and an MA in American Studies at University of Texas,
Austin, her academic work explored the connection between art and social
change. Tracy worked for a decade as a social change strategist and producer
for NGOs and documentary filmmakers. When life presented her the opportunity to
focus her energy on creating photographs, Tracy jumped at the opportunity to
explore through the lens of a camera the themes she is passionate about. Tracy’s work has been featured on lenscratch.com and shown at the Perfect Exposure Gallery and the Los Angeles
Center of Photography.
