About the Work
It’s not polite to stare, but you know you want to... Shot in the dark the provocative images in the series “Clubland” illuminate the glossy, garish and luscious minutia of the night life landscape. A cultural observer documenting the unguarded moments and humorous juxtapositions up close and tightly cropped to reveal the details often missed. Twisting arms and legs, sweaty thighs and torsos, drink in hand become abstract shapes. “Clubland” provides a peepshow window view exposing the anonymous yet familiar. Go on, take a look...
About the Artist
Wednesday Aja was born in Los Angeles, California at a time when naming a child after a satirical pop reference was still an original idea. She grew up in California, receiving her BA in Art History from UCLA. Despite a career as a graphic designer, her true passion remains photography. Like many photographers her first camera was a gift, a Kodak Instamatic for a third birthday. Early subjects included younger siblings and family pets dressed in costume and styled with props in the backyard.
The pursuit of fresh subjects and vistas lead to new experiences. A cross-country road trip became a 10 year stay in Austin, Texas where she first learned the craft of letterpress printing and developed a love for slow cooked brisket and loud live music. Later a design project too good to pass up took her to Paris, France. While there she spent several years collaborating with fashion designers and photographers producing “Behind The Scenes” photos of shoots and documenting the fashion scene.
Her work can be found in galleries and private collections. She currently resides in Southern California where she plans her next adventure.
